The Municipality of South Bruce offers several waste diversion programs at the Mildmay-Carrick and Teeswater-Culross landfills. Styrofoam and mattresses & box springs are accepted at both landfill sites. Asphalt shingles and drywall is accepted at the Teeswater site only.  All materials needs to be segregated.

Diversion Programs

Mattresses and box springs consume a significant amount of airspace.  South Bruce will be working with Recyc-Mattresses to recycle our mattresses and box springs.  There is a dedicated site trailer at each landfill site for disposal.

Drywall and Asphalt Singles (Teeswater site only) are construction materials which can be diverted from landfills.  TRY Recycling accepts these products at their London, Ontairo location and South Bruce will be utilizing then to recycle these products.  TRY Recycling has been servicing the recycling an composting industries since 1991.  Please ensure your segregate these materials and ask your attendant for disposal locations/questions.

Household batteries are recycled in partnership with the Bruce County Highways Department and Stewardship Ontario to provide residents with the Household Hazardous and Special Waste Program through the Orange Drop Program.  Although household batteries comprise only 1% of total waste sent to our municipal landfills, they are responsible for between 50-70% of all heavy metals found in the landfills (mercury, cadmium, lead).  The effects of improper battery recycling are severe.  Accepted batteries include; Single-use batteries (AAAs, AAs, 9-volt, D’s & C’s), Lithium batteries (must be placed in a plastic bag or taped at both terminal ends), button cell batteries, and corroded or leading batteries (must be placed in a plastic bag before placing the container).
