About Your Tax Bill
The Municipality of South Bruce is responsible for billing and collecting property taxes for the municipality and on behalf of the County of Bruce and the local school boards.
The amounts collected on behalf of the school boards are based on the tax rates supplied annually by the Ministry of Finance and the annual assessment roll from MPAC.
Payment may be made:
- By mail
- In person at the Municipal Office during working hours 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- At the dropboxes in Teeswater (Municipal Office), Mildmay (Macs Milk)
- At most financial institutions (MICR encoding on your tax bills)
- Via telephone banking (set-up with most major financial institutions)
- Online banking
Accepted methods of payment:
- Cheque (post-dated cheques are accepted)
- Interac Debit Card
- Pre-authorized payment plans – monthly or installment
If you are interested in equalized tax payments, please fill out a Pre-Authorization Form indicating your preference. These payments will be deducted monthly on the 15th, with the adjustment month being December in any given year.

Tax Certificates/Tax Statement of Accounts/Zoning Certificates
Tax Certificates are available by written request. There is a $45.00 fee per roll number as per the most current assessment roll. There is a $60.00 fee for requests within a 48 hour period.
Zoning and Compliance Certificates are $75.00
Tax Statement of Accounts are available upon request. There is a $10.00 fee for tax statement or re-print of your tax bill.
Taxes Paid With Your Mortgage
Often, after a final billing, a mortgage company will re-adjust the tax payment portion of the mortgage to account for either a surplus or deficit in your mortgage tax account. This adjustment is not always because your property tax has increased or decreased from the previous year but, for various reasons, because the mortgage company was not originally collecting enough money on a monthly basis or too much on a monthly basis.
If you have questions regarding a tax adjustment on your mortgage account, it is always best to contact your mortgage company first, they should be able to provide you the primary cause behind any payment adjustments.
Penalty and Interest Charges
To avoid penalties or interest charges, your property tax or water utility payment, must be received by our office on or before the due date.
Penalty and interest charges for late payment are set by Municipal by-law and in accordance with the Municipal Act.
Penalty is applicable on the first day of default and on the first day of each calendar month thereafter in which default continues as set out in the Municipal Act. The penalty rate is 1.25% per month or 15% per annum. The Treasurer and/or other staff cannot waive penalty.
Farm Tax Rate
You may verify your eligibility for the farm tax rate by calling OMAFRA at 1-800-469-2285. You may verify your assessment tax class by calling MPAC (Assessment Office) at 1-866-296-6722.

If one homeowner or one tenant is a non-Catholic, then complete the school assessment lease form below, as well as the Application for Direction of School Support form. The lease form gives the Catholic the right to direct property taxes to the Catholic schools.
Request for Consideration
The deadline for completing this form is March 31 of the taxation year to which the application applies.
Request for Adjustment (Section 357/358)
Tax adjustments can be requested if one of the following has affected you or your property:
- A building destroyed by fire
- Demolition or otherwise
- Mobile home unit removed
- Sickness or extreme poverty
- Gross or manifest clerical/factual error
- Building damaged or substantially unusable
- Ceases to be liable at tax rate it was taxed at
Exemption due to renovations preventing normal use (minimum 3 months)
In 2016, the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is updating the assessed values of every property in Ontario. All properties will have a legislated valuation date of January 1, 2016. These values will be used by the Municipality of South Bruce to calculate your property taxes for the 2017-2020 property tax years.
Residential property owners can expect to receive their Property Assessment Notice starting on May 24, 2016. Notices for business properties and farms will be mailed Fall 2016.

Supplementary Tax Bills
These bills are sent out after the regular billing and represent a change to your property assessment. This change will be added to your tax bill the following year. These bills are forwarded directly to the property owner for payment. If you wish to make arrangements with your mortgage company that is the responsibility of the property owner.
